NOMAL / NOMAL NOT NORMAL

NOMAL is a name derived from the word “NORMAL,” with the letter R intentionally removed, retaining only its sound.

It represents a practice exploring the unfamiliar within the familiar, uncovering extraordinary possibilities within everyday life.

​NOMAL은 ‘NORMAL(평범한)’이라는 단어에서 알파벳 R을 덜어내고, ‘노말’이라는 발음만을 취한 이름이다. 익숙한 일상 속에서 평범한 요소를 살짝 비틀어 새롭고 비범한 가능성을 탐색하는 열린 건축가 집단이다.

VISION

NOMAL’s architecture begins with an attitude of junction. City and architecture, tradition and the present, technology and life are not opposing forces, but layered elements, each with its own rhythm and texture. NOMAL seeks to interweave these differing currents without conflict, creating spaces at their points of convergence.

 

Ideas once impossible are now realized through contemporary technology. Tradition is rearticulated not as a static legacy but as a living language of the present. Prejudices and conventions are reinterpreted, and new balances are introduced into familiar orders. Each project offers not merely a proposal of form, but an architectural interpretation where structure, environment, life, and experience intersect.

 

Architecture is not an isolated object. It is a public medium that connects a city's flows across time. By reading a site's context, layering temporal traces, and reestablishing spatial axes, NOMAL aims to construct spaces with meaningful relationships and densities formed through deliberate junctions wherever architecture takes root.

NOMAL의 건축은 접합의 태도로부터 시작된다. 도시와 건축, 전통과 현재, 기술과 삶은 단절된 것이 아니라, 각기 다른 속도와 결을 가진 층위들이며, NOMAL은 이 서로 다른 흐름들이 충돌하지 않고 어우러지도록 엮어내며, 그 접점에서 공간을 만들어 나가는 태도를 취하고자 한다.

과거에 실현되지 못했던 구상을 오늘의 기술로 구현하고, 전통을 정체된 유산이 아닌 동시대의 언어로 다시 말한다. 편견과 관습을 재해석하고, 익숙한 질서에 새로운 균형을 부여한다. NOMAL의 작업은 단순한 형식 제안이 아니라, 구조와 환경, 삶과 경험이 접하는 건축적 해석이다.

건축은 고립된 조형이 아니다. 오랜 시간 도시의 흐름을 연결하는 공공의 매개이다. NOMAL은 땅의 맥락을 읽고 시간의 겹을 정돈하며, 축을 다시 세우는 작업을 통해, 건축이 놓인 자리마다 가장 유의미한 관계와 밀도를 접합하여 구축해 나가려 한다.
