    On a 2,538㎡ site, an existing 195㎡ house was preserved. The client decided to keep it, transforming it into a residence as well as a welcome space with a café where guests would first arrive.

    Instead of building two separate glass houses as originally imagined, the program was consolidated into one structure to reduce cost. The two rooms were oriented in different directions, allowing guests to enjoy the openness of glass walls without the need for curtains. A mechanical room was placed between them to create separation, and circulation was carefully planned so that maintenance access would never overlap with guest movement.

    To preserve the purity of the glass house, the structural columns were pulled inside the glass line, and the roof was shaped in stepped layers. This provided space for structure and equipment while keeping the form visually light, giving the roof the same apparent thickness as the floor slab. Openings were designed to open fully where needed and to close firmly where privacy was required.

    Each room was given its own character. In the eastern unit, the center was left open and furniture arranged along the perimeter, creating a calm and familiar living atmosphere. In the western unit, furniture was placed at the center with clear edges around, highlighting the unique transparency of a glass house. This contrast offered visitors a choice between comfort that feels residential and an experience that celebrates openness.

     767평의 땅에서는 이미 60평 크기의 구옥이 자리 잡고 있었다. 이 구옥은 건축주가 살 수 있는 집과 스테이를 사용할 고객들이 처음 열쇠를 받아갈 웰컴 데스크이자 카페로 활용하고자 하였다.

    건축주는 두개의 글라스 하우스를 원하였지만, 건축비용 절감을 위해 동을 분리하기보다는 하나의 동으로 만들고 서로 다른 곳을 보게 하여 커튼을 치지 않고도 온전히 글라스하우스의 장점을 누릴 수 있게 만들어 주었다. 두 실 사이에 기계실을 배치하여 이를 통해 두 실이 분리되도록 하였다. 동선 역시 다양한 시뮬레이션을 통해 운영자가 기계실을 점검할 때에도 두 사용자와 서로 겹치지 않도록 하였다.

    글라스 하우스의 개념을 최대한 살리기 위해 기둥은 유리 안쪽으로 배치하고 지붕의 형태를 계단 형으로 만들어 충분한 구조와 설비 공간을 확보하면서도 형태적으로는 최소화하여 바닥의 두께와 같게 보이게끔 비율을 잡았다. 열어야 하는 공간은 활짝 열고 닫아야 하는 공간은 확실하게 닫아주었다.

    두 개의 실은 각자 서로 다른 특성을 구현해 주었다. 동측에는 중심을 비워 두고 테두리에 가구를 배치하는 방식으로 구성하고 반대로 서측에서는 중심에 가구 배치하고 테두리를 비워주는 방식으로 구성하였다. 중심을 비우는 구성은 우리가 익숙하게 사용하는 주거 공간처럼 편안함을 제공해 주고자 함이었고 테두리를 비우는 형식은 보다 글라스 하우스 특성을 강조해 주고자 함이었다. 이를 통해 방문객은 각자의 취향에 맞게 방을 선택할 수도 있었으면 하였다. ×
