    The residential neighborhood of Gumi-dong was originally developed by a major construction company, featuring rows of red brick homes built in a similar style. Over the past 30 years, time has softened their uniformity, giving the streetscape a quiet, natural rhythm.

    The site sits on a corner lot exposed to three streets, making it one of the most prominent locations in the neighborhood. The client envisioned a bold and elegant home that would stand out, while also providing a spacious yard for the family to gather. They hoped the first floor would open fully to the outdoors, and the upper floors would offer private, self-contained rooms for each family member.

    The ground level was organized around the yard and a series of semi-outdoor spaces. The living room connects directly to the garden, allowing everyday life to unfold in close relationship with nature. The space serves as a stage for family gatherings and shared routines.

    The upper floors offer each family member a private suite with a bedroom, dressing room, bathroom, and individual terrace. These spaces combine personal retreat with a quiet connection to the outdoors.

    To stay in tune with the neighborhood, red brick was used as the primary exterior finish. Rather than emphasize size and scale, the massing was subtly broken down and the materials reinterpreted with a contemporary touch. The result is a home that feels generous yet grounded, distinctive yet integrated into its surroundings.

    This project is an attempt to create a house that grows naturally into the life and landscape of its neighborhood with quiet strength and lasting presence.

    구미동 주택단지는 과거 대형 건설사가 계획적으로 개발한 지역으로, 비슷한 형태를 가진 붉은 벽돌의 고급 주택들이 줄지어 있는 마을이다. 개발된 지 30년이 넘어가면서, 단지 곳곳에는 시간의 결이 스며들어 자연스러운 풍경을 이루고 있다. 

   이 중에서도 도로 삼면에 접하고 모서리에 위치한 대지는 단지 내에서도 가장 시선이 모이는 자리였다. 건축주는 이 대지에 크고 멋진, 그리고 단지 안에서도 단연 돋보이는 주택을 원하였다. 또한 가족이 함께 시간을 보낼 수 있는 넓은 마당과 이를 자연스럽게 연장하는 1층 공간 구성을 요청했으며, 상층부에서는 각 가족 구성원이 프라이버시를 충분히 보호받을 수 있는 독립적인 공간을 원했다. 

   이에 따라 1층은 마당과 반외부 공간을 중심으로 구성하고, 거실은 야외 공간과 유기적으로 연결되도록 계획하였다. 창을 열면 언제든 마당과 이어지는 구조로, 집 안에서도 마치 캠핑을 하듯 자유롭게 자연을 누릴 수 있는 생활 방식을 의도하였다. 가족 모두가 함께 시간을 보내거나 휴식을 취할 수 있는 열린 공간이자, 일상의 연장선이 되는 무대가 되기를 기대했다. 

   윗층은 각 가족 구성원의 침실, 드레스룸, 전용 욕실로 구성되어 독립성과 사생활을 보장하고자 했다. 또한 각 방에는 별도의 야외 테라스를 두어, 개인적인 휴식과 자연을 동시에 누릴 수 있도록 하였다. 

   외관은 구미동 주택단지의 고유한 분위기를 존중하여, 붉은 벽돌을 주요 재료로 사용하였다. 단순히 크기와 스케일만을 강조하기보다는, 건물의 높낮이를 섬세하게 조정하고, 기존 주택들의 재료성과 질감을 현대적으로 재해석하여 적용함으로써, 동네와 조화를 이루는 하나의 집으로 자리매김할 수 있도록 설계하였다. 

   크지만 위화감 없는 집, 개성과 조화가 동시에 살아 있는 집을 만들고자 한 이번 프로젝트는, 시간이 지나며 더욱 자연스럽게 마을의 풍경 안으로 녹아들게 될 것이다.
