    Iseojae means “a house that spreads benefit,” expressing a philosophy that unites life, home, work, and self as one.

    After returning from years of study abroad, Iseojae settled in a small Hanok at the foot of Inwang Mountain, west of Gyeongbokgung Palace. Repairing the house with her own hands created a deep bond with the space. The Hanok’s windows became a way of connecting with nature, while gatherings at the Jipjeon allowed her to share food, philosophy, and life with guests. The house embodied not only daily living but also the landscapes and traditions she encountered, becoming a place that linked heritage and lived experience.

    The new house, located just five minutes from the old one, was more than a relocation. It was a step toward strengthening the identity of the place. Rather than replicate the past, the design balanced accumulated experience with contemporary needs, preserving both spatial and emotional identity while introducing modern practicality.

    The new home was conceived not only as a dwelling but as a vessel for life and philosophy. The old Hanok was preserved and enriched with contemporary elements. Spaces were organized into private areas such as bedrooms and the tea room, and public areas such as the main hall and kitchen. Windows, porches, and stone walls were designed in relation to the courtyard tree and the Jipjeon, combining traditional aesthetics with practical use.

    Since its completion, the house has continued to absorb and express Iseojae’s sensibility and philosophy. Its layers are still unfolding, making it a place that bridges past and present, tradition and modern life, while continuing to grow through the stories shared within it.

    이서재(利敍齋)는 ‘이롭게 펼치는 집’이라는 뜻으로, 삶과 집, 작품과 자신을 하나로 일치시키려는 철학을 담고 있다.

    이서재는 긴 유학생활 후 귀국해 경복궁 서측 인왕산 자락의 작은 한옥에서 살며, 직접 수리하며 집과 유대감을 쌓았다. 한옥의 창을 통해 자연과 소통하며 전통을 체험하고, ‘집전’이라는 자리에서 손님들과 음식을 나누며 삶과 철학을 공유했다. 공간에는 이서재가 마주한 풍경이 담겨 있어, 단순한 거처가 아닌 전통과 삶을 잇는 공간이 되었다.

    새 집은 옛 집에서 5분 거리에 위치하며, 단순한 이사가 아닌 공간의 정체성을 더욱 공고히 하는 과정이었다. 과거의 가치를 답습하는 것이 아니라, 축적된 경험을 바탕으로 전통과 현대적 요구를 조화롭게 고려했다. 공간적, 감성적 정체성을 유지하면서도 변화에 맞춘 실용성을 고민했다.

    새 집은 단순한 공간이 아니라, 삶과 철학을 담는 하나의 그릇으로 기획되었다. 오래된 한옥을 보존하며 현대적 요소를 조화롭게 적용했고, 사적 공간(침실, 다실)과 공적 공간(마루, 주방)으로 구분하여 구성되었다. 창, 툇마루, 돌담 등은 중정의 나무와 '집전'을 고려하여 설계되었으며, 전통적인 미감을 유지하면서도 기능성을 갖췄다.

    이 집은 준공 이후에도 이서재가 지닌 미감과 철학이 자연스럽게 스며들고 있으며, 그 결은 지금도 계속 쌓여가고 있다. 새 집은 과거와 현재, 전통과 현대를 잇는 공간으로서, 앞으로도 사람들과의 이야기를 통해 지속적으로 성장하고 확장될 것이다.
